History In the 1920s, Amish and Mennonite farmers were persuaded to come to Sarasota to use the land for agricultural purposes, primarily to grow celery, a common Amish crop. When they arrived, they found the soil was not suitable for extensive celery crops, but the weather enticed them to stay. or at least visit on a regular basis.

The Amish community in the Sarasota-area Pinecraft neighborhood is one of the most unique Amish settlements. So Pinecraft was a sleepy corner of Sarasota where Amish people descended to play shuffleboard and spend the winter. Despite the increased spotlight, the village still holds a certain charm and mystique. The Pinecraft, Florida Amish community has its own charm and customs, it's own cuisine and color. There are some all-year Amish residents in Pinecraft, but not very many.

72 Comments Last week I made a short visit to the Pinecraft Amish community at Sarasota, Florida. I wanted to share that visit with you via a series of photos.
